Students Exploring Health in Their Community
Urban Health Innovation Club is a student-led organization at Thomas A. Edison CTE High School focused on understanding health inequities and encouraging students to engage with the health issues affecting their communities.
Who We Are
Urban Health Innovation Club (UHI) is based at Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School in Jamaica, Queens. The club brings students together around health equity, community health, and youth advocacy, with an emphasis on student involvement in research and writing. Members explore local health challenges and consider how young people can take an active role in addressing them.
The Urban Health Innovation Club focuses primarily to address the vast amounts of health inequities within Jamaica, Queens by identifying local health challenges, encouraging the implementation of solutions, and enabling the youth to become advocates within their communities. Through a wide range of projects, we aim to raise awareness for the large communities within Jamaica with the support of the students at Thomas A. Edison CTE High School.
Our Approach
UHI’s work centers on identifying local health challenges and learning about the inequities that shape them. Members raise awareness within the school community, encourage practical, achievable solutions, and involve students directly in research, writing, and discussion. Over time, this approach is meant to build youth advocacy: students who are informed about health issues and prepared to speak on them within their own communities.
Rooted in Jamaica, Queens
UHI’s work is connected to Jamaica, Queens and the communities surrounding Thomas A. Edison CTE High School. The club’s focus on health equity and community health is shaped by this local context, and its projects are intended to engage directly with the neighborhood the school is part of.
